ANAW At United Nations Environment Assembly

ANAW, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Friedrich Ebert Foundation and Konrad Adenauer Foundation held a multi-stakeholder consultation on the outcomes of the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the Paris Agreement. The workshop addressed the inter-linkages between climate change, food security and environmental conservation, focusing on the relevance for East and Southern Africa.

ANAW played a critical role by hosting a high-level panel discussion on the impact of climate change on wildlife and illegal wildlife trade. The panelists consisted of Mr. Kitili Mbathi Director General Kenya Wildlife Service; Ms. Rhoda Ogoma Assistant Director Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Hon. Lady Justice Jacqueline Kamau Judge of the High Court and Mr. Kahindi Lekalhaile Public Affairs Director, ANAW. The session was chaired by Prof. Nicholas Oguge of the University of Nairobis Centre For Advanced Studies In Environmental Law And Policy.

ANAW further gave the key note address through the Hon. Justice (Prof) Otieno-Odek, Judge of Appeal and Director of the Judiciary Training Institute; facilitated a plenary discussion where delegates gave their action points post the UNEA -2 workshop, and lastly, made a presentation of the meeting resolutions by Executive Director Josphat Ngonyo.

The forum provided ANAW an opportunity to share information, learn, network and present its vision to a high-level, regional platform, particularly on animal welfare and its interplay with climate change and other environmental issues.
