Sharing Perspectives in Animal Welfare

Ongoing Discussion: Start Date- 1 June 2017 & End Date- 10 June 2017

A Guide to Our Online Discussion Forum

Interpretation of the terms “Animal Welfare” greatly depends on our individual understanding of the subject matter. A myriad of factors exist that define the direction that our perspective will take. It would be then true to say that Animal Welfare as a subject rotates around attitudes, behaviour, beliefs, personalities, culture, environment, experiences and much more.

It is only by understanding our different perspectives on the subject that stakeholders in Animal Welfare are then able to define workable strategies of interventions that once tailored to each situation help to improve the welfare of animals and consequently that of humans as well.

Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) recognises that such differences in perspectives exist. It is against this background that we have established an online discussion forum where individuals are invited to contribute their views to a seemingly simple statement whose answers run deep into animal welfare matters.

How this Works?

At the beginning of each month, one topic is selected and individuals are invited to give their views through our online platform. Contributors to any given subject are free to comment on other individual’s posts, make additions or provide a whole different view on how they perceive the subject in discussion.

The moderator then compiles all the views available during that month and presents the same to a team of experts for further review. Content compiled is then subjected to a face-to-face plenary of 25-30 persons invited to our Open Plenary Forums (OPFs) held every 1st week of the next quarter. Recommendations and/or findings of each OPF are carefully scrutinised by a team of animal welfare experts and made available to relevant stakeholders to further inform critical interventions in Animal Welfare.
